Alex Koresis
Alex Koresis is a second generation Australian who grew up in the arts capital of Melbourne studying drums and percussion with Don Santin.
His first public performances were playing drum kit and tympani with the Kew Symphonic Band at the age of 11 which fuelled his passion for live performance.
He went on to play drums with various cover bands and ensembles in Melbourne, studying at University and working at the Victorian Arts Centre. In 1992, Alex collaborated with DJ’s and dancers to develop club shows, performing at venues such as Metro, Chasers and The Warehouse. A few years later he left the club scene and started writing original hip hop and dance music before moving to Perth in 1998 to pursue work opportunities.
In 2000, Alex met Paul Kofi Osei who introduced him to traditional West African rhythms. Since then Alex helped form drumming sensation AKWAABA (formerly WAADA), playing djembe, kpalongo and dun duns and was recorded on 2 albums with the band. Over the last 8 years Alex has played extensively with AKWAABA at festivals and events throughout Western Australia and supported acts such as Michael Franti and Deni Hines. In 2002 Alex recorded and toured with band Jonathan White and started infusing live percussion with DJ’s back in Perth. In 2004 he teamed up with Adam Cousins to form KAVA, a combination of DJ, live percussion and sax that currently holds several residencies in Perth and performed at Good Vibrations in 2008/2009 and supported many touring acts including Morcheeba. In 2005 he collaborated with local and international artists to form The Hybrid Collective playing organic chill out/ dance music at festivals and concerts throughout the state. Despite its popularity, the collective split and Alex joined The Essence, playing percussion to flamenco flavored hip hop at events such as Miss Teen Australia and supporting the likes of Jose Padilla. Following a successful stint with the trio he went on to freelance and play with local and international DJ’s including Regal, Vadim, Super Cozi and Mark Doyle of Hed Kandi. In 2009 he performed at Summadayze, Southbound, and Good Vibrations adding live percussion to the mix. His new love is Egyptian Tabla beats...
